Reproduction and hybridization in ferns

This thesis studies several aspects of fern reproduction and hybridization. Aspects of multiple stages in the fern life cycle are analyzed. Specifically, rates of spore abortion and antheridiogen usage are assessed and compared between various groups. Own cultivation and spore assessment data are compared extensively with existing literature. Finally, the rate of hybridization in natural populations and the symmetry of hybridization is analyzed in buckler ferns (Dryopteris carthusiana group).
Natural sources and sinks of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons in the spruce forest ecosystem

Biogeochemical cycle of chlorine, particularly the formation of organically bound chlorine is still not well understood. In continental ecosystems chlorides act as source of chlorine, and also as a stress factor. Chlorides originate from precipitation of marine cloud masses. Organically bound chlorine in the environment is formed naturally by biotical and abiotical way. The biotical factors are microorganisms, plants, soil enzymes and animals. Volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VOCl) represent one group of organically bound chlorines. Several volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons reacts with atmospheric ozone, consequently causing depletion of the ozone layer. The most important known terrestrial source of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons is the spruce forest ecosystem. Chlorine in the soil can be transformed by microorganisms into organically bound chlorine or translocated by transpiration stream in plants, where they are also transformed enzymatically into organically bound chlorine, and both of them can be emitted into the atmosphere. Too large amounts of chloride can affect the physiological functions of plants. Bryological Oriented Excursion in the Dolský mlýn Area

The aim of this thesis was to carry out an analysis of primary school textbooks considering bryophytes and bracken, as well as to plan a biological excursion in the area of Dolský Mlýn which would include mapping the terrain. The sixth chapter contains the analysis of nine textbooks from different publishing houses. I have compared them in terms of the number of pages dedicated to bryophytes and bracken and in terms of the number of stated bryophytes and bracken representatives. I have also compared whether the textbooks are provided by workbooks, methodological guides and other material, which could variegate biology and natural history teaching. The seventh chapter characterises the location. Mapping of the terrain for the planned excursion took place in September 2012. I chose fourteen suitable sites which are were easily accessible. The eight chapter includes methodical instructions of the excursion for teachers, worklists and the key to determining types of bryophytes. The practical verification of my thesis took place in April 2013 during an excursion of seventh grade pupils from the school ZŠ a MŠ Děčín IV. Laboratory training, which represents an integral part of the excursion took place in March due to unfavorable chmate conditions. Pupils determined mosses of genus Merike according to their...

Dynamics of rare and threatened species on local and regional scale- from theory to practice

To assess the status of a rare plant species, we must first understand the factors that affect the size of populations and their numbers. In this thesis, I study processes affecting plant species prosperity on local scale (paper 1), factors influencing species distribution in landscape and ability of species to colonize new habitats (paper 2) and species traits responsible for gene flow between established populations (paper 3). Since I work with rare plants, I also aim to turn theoretical knowledge into practical recommendations for nature conservation (paper 4) to help effectively preserve rare and endangered species. In the first 3 papers, I work with two rare fern species restricted to serpentine rocks, Asplenium adulterinum and A. cuneifolium, in a study system covering 10 × 10 km. I found that both species are long living (several decades) and in the study region, populations are in a good state and slowly growing. Even very small populations (10 individuals) have quite high chance to survive. In both fern species, I found dispersal limitation, which might be surprising regarding huge production of small spores in ferns (paper 2). The species differ in ploidy and thus, also mating system. The main aim of this work is to show the fern as a valuable part of modern gardens and their importance in the composition, as well as their basic botanical characteristics . The work deals with the summary of current knowledge of the literature in the area of cultivation , ecology and biology of ferns. I present here the basic growing claims on the use of ferns in the garden and landscape architecture. An essential part of the work is also designing collection garden of ferns. The main finding is that is possible (with some restrictions) to create a garden composed from ferns, but should be complemented by other plant species.

Purposes work was study current assortment of ferns, determine criterion selection for use and deal with enforcement of ferns in current garden and landscape planning. This work pursue frost resistance types of ferns -- needs the, which given apply in country planting. Origin of ferns, botanical and morphological characteristics show uniqueness these plants and determine of them especial place among other hardy perennials. For use of ferns was defined properties important to assemble the composition, effect in composition (looks properties), for design plantings and related with maintenance tending plants (growth properties) and further properties necessary for founding, maintenance and revival of planting (grower properties). Such characteristics society with oecology condition appoint individual species deduce large diversity of possibility use ferns in garden and landscape works.
